Sandblasting, also referred to as abrasive blasting, uses compressed air to propel small abrasive materials, such as sand or aluminum oxide grit, at a surface to strip away imperfections. This process removes oil, grease, dirt, rust, mil scale, oxides, old paint, and other foreign materials from various surfaces.

In cases where the material will be coated, sandblasting helps prime the surface by creating an anchor pattern that allows the coating to adhere better to the material.
